How can I encourage my child to show excitement about STEM?

It doesn’t have to be hard to encourage your child to try out STEM subjects. There are so many different STEM careers, many are new fields that are only beginning to exist! With the rise of technology, the level of STEM career options is only expected to rise. It has been predicted that STEM roles are going to double in the next 10 years 

 

The best way to inspire your child would be to think about their passion and what they enjoy doing the most. But do remember, even if your child isn’t interested in STEM roles, STEM education goes far beyond STEM fields alone. It helps prepare your child to move into any industry with lots of transferable skills such as problem solving, creativity and critical thinking.

1. Gameplay Engineer 

Gameplay engineers are code writers who adapt software to the requirements of a video game. They oversea things such as player notifications, gameplay mechanics and game upgrades. If your child loves video games – this might be the career for them! 

2. Animator 

Animators are highly skilled. They design images and turn them into animationsIf your child has an interest in drawing and computers, they could create both 2D and 3D images for websites, games or movies by working in animation! 

3. Ethical Hacker 

Ethical Hackers are highly skilled computer scientists. They are hired to identify vulnerabilities in a networks system and to find ways of securing and fixing them before potential criminals gain access. 

4. LEGO Designer

LEGO Designers do exactly that – they design LEGO! This career involves education in a technical field and requires lots of passion for LEGO! 

5. Bioenergy Engineer 

Bioenergy Engineers are focused on creating a greener future by harnessing power from renewable resources. For example, they would think of scientific and complex ways to covert waste into renewable energy 

6. Underwater Archaeologist 

Many treasures of history are hidden at the bottom of our oceans! Underwater Archaeologists often work for government agencies and universities to explore and research lakes, rivers, and the sea. They also get to use some high-tech gadgets when doing their work! 

7. Fragrance Chemist 

Fragrance Chemists conduct lots of complex research to develop appealing fragrances for household products and cosmetics. These scientists often work in research labs and test lots of samples before they are developed and on stocked on our supermarket shelves! 

8. Storm Tracker 

A Storm Tracker specialises in severe weather conditions, including hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms. They will often detect potential storms and monitor them to see whether a public warning is needed. The job also includes assessing its strength, direction and level of damage caused – a very interesting and complex profession. 

9. Forensic Scientist

Forensic Scientists are the heroes behind a crime scene. They analyse everything for scientific evidence that can be used in the courts of law. This could be anything from handwriting to tyre tracks! 

10. Food Chemist 

Food Chemists experiment with the chemical makeup of food to make them safer, tastier, and longer lasting. They have active involvement with enhancing nutritional content, heat processing methods and deciding on shelf lives. If your child is interested in nutrition and diet (and of course food!) – this career might interest them!
